about

Serpentine is a shimmering sandpapery psychedelic love song. It’s a mix of dream pop and neo-Motown. If Tame Impala produced a grittier/modern/laid-back version of the 60s San Francisco pop of the Mamas and the Papas. The song is an apology. About the impossibility of retracting hurtful statements. About the way insensitive words slither into our psyches and cause us to doubt ourselves, our relationships to each other, and to reality itself. “Time’s a line // It’s serpentine.” It has a head and a tail, but doesn’t always move forward at the same pace. It stops and starts and curls around. And when we're triggered by something painful it often swings back to the first moment in our lives where we were hurt in a similar way. We are reminded and often respond the same way we did then. We cope reactively. We act out compulsively. Time has seemingly collapsed on itself. We relive our past but in new ways. Time may not repeat itself exactly, but time certainly rhymes. It’s serpentine. Like a snake in our ear. Whispering dark secrets. Poems of self questioning. Dripping with the mythic language of the psyche, the night language of our dreams, and pointing us toward the moments in our lives we still need to process in order to slip forward forever freely, with unshakeable self assuredness.

lyrics

I feel like a fool / I feel like a feather floating down / I feel like I’m standing here with no feet on the ground / you know that I’ve said things that I wish I could take back / they’re stuck inside your mind in self-attack / if I could you know I would but it’s no good / time’s a line it’s serpentine / I’m genuine I would / if I could take it back for good / time’s a line it’s serpentine / genuine I would / I crossed a line it’s serpentine / genuine I would
